Documents preserved in

6 May 1709 - A list of all the poor Germans lately come over from the Palatinate (Rhine
River area) into this Kingdom Tolsen in St. Catherine's. (1) Hornigh (Kornegay now) - John
George, age 38 years, (his) wife (no age), sons (2) 8 and 2 years old, daughters (2) 12
and 10 years old. Member - Reformed Church. Husbandman and Winedresser.
Sailed for America in Jan. 1710 with a group sponsored by Baron
Christopher De Graffenreid and settled in Craven County, N. C., near the present City of
New Bern,
9-22-1711 - the Tuscarorra Indians attacked and killed about 120
settlers - men, women and children. The only survivor of the Kornegay family was son
George.
N.C. State Archives - Craven County Court Minutes, 1712-1713.
Aug. 1713 - Disposition of Orphans. Jacob Miller (or Muller) took into his care two
orphans and promised to teach them to read and write and take care of them until 21 years
of age and to have them taught a carpenters trade. These orphans were George Kornegay and
George Koonce. (George Koonce, Craven County Will, prob CA 1772).
I choose to believe that George Kornegay was the oldest son,
which might have contributed to his survival. Therefore, I have assigned CA 1799 as his
birth year.
Note: It was during this same massacre that
Charles Cogdell and my ancestor, George Cogdell lost their father. I have no known Komegay
lineage- [J.M.O.]

|
It is said, by Kornegay
family researchers, that George Komegay, Sr. was married twice. First and believed to be
mother of all of his children, Mary Fisher.
Second, Susannah (Stechey) Stevens.
Mary Komegay, only daughter of George and Mary (Fisher) Kornegay,
married first, Daniel Simmons, son of John and Margarett (Bussett) Simmons, of Jones
County, N.C. Two children of this marriage.
1. George Simmons (Jones County Will, 1-10-1794) Wife, Nancy, no
known children.
2. Daniel Simmons (3-21-1766, 1826), Family to follow.
Following Daniel's death, Mary married second, Edward C. DeBruhl, Two known children: Mary
and Edward DeBruhl.
I do not know of any documentation that George Kornegay, Sr.
lived in Duplin County at any time, nor were any of his children born anywhere except in
Craven County, in my opinion.
Son Abraham could not have been born in 1754 according to the
will, indicating that he owned negroes and horses. He would have been 19, a minor.
The span between Abraham and Daniel indicates that the last two
either had a different mother, or Mary Fisher was born about 1712 and Daniel and Elijah
were somewhat older than the dates assigned them.

NOTE: Oates may
be incorrect in connecting Isaac as son of John Kornegay & Rachel Matthew. Per
Isaac Kornegay (1766-1838) family Bible records, he is in fact, son of William Kornegay,
Sr. and Elizabeth Outlaw. The existing Bible records appear to be only of Isaac and
his descendants, since no births, marriages, spouses or deaths for ancestors are
included. And it appears that Hettie Cooper Watkins added this information
"William Kornegay, Sr., June 22, 1812 this William Kornegay was father to Isaac my
Great Grandfather. Joseph, son of William died January 31, 1769. Elizabeth Kornegay wife
of William Kornegay died April 30, 1821 being 78 years old (must be my gt gt
grandmother)". Note: She is not stating as fact she only says "must
be." Kathlynn contacted Mr. Oates and he consented to this correction.
His error is certainly very understandable, since he found NO COURT RECORDS FOR WILLIAM in
his extensive search, he concluded that Isaac must be a son of John Kornegay.
