He's following in his father's footsteps.
Dr. Hervy Kornegay Jr. honored by Mount Olive Rescue
By Nelson Bland - Staff Writer

He used to be the friendly, smiling little boy in his miniature Mount Olive rescue uniform, riding with his physician father on rescue calls.
Today he's all grown up and a doctor himself. But Dr. Hervy Kornegay, Jr. still has that friendly, smiling personality.
Right now, Kornegay is a physician in residency at University Medical Center of Eastern North Carolina at Greenville, formerly Pitt Memorial Hospital. But in the not-too-distant future he hopes to return home.
Kornegay said he will work at Wayne Memorial Hospital at Goldsboro, continue to serve on the Mount Olive Rescue Service and make his home in his native Calypso.
Kornegay is following in the medical footsteps of his father, well known and well-liked Mount Olive physician, Dr. Hervy Kornegay Sr. of Calypso.

He Was recognized

Recently at the Mount Olive Rescue Service installation banquet here, Dr. Kornegay Jr. was recognized for being nominated by the local squad for the state Steve Richie Memorial Award for Outstanding Rescueperson of the Year.
The award is given by the state rescue association in memory of Steve Richie, a volunteer rescueman who died several years ago in a water tank rescue involving a helicopter in Kenansville. The winner of this year's award was Jerry Bradshaw of the Clinton-Sampson Rescue Squad in neighboring Sampson County.
Rescue EMT Ann Kelly said the local squad nominated Dr. Kornegay Jr. because of his sincere dedication to the rescue service and for his outstanding contributions to the squad and community.

'In His Blood"'

"It's in his blood," Mrs. Kelly said. "He has loved rescue work all his life, having gone with his father on calls when he was just a kid. He was 16 when he got his EMT certification, and at 18 he joined the Mount Olive Rescue Service and the Calypso Fire Department."
Mrs. Kelly said that Kornegay's becoming a doctor was what he has wanted to do all his life.
"While attending East Carolina University and medical school, he continued to be a vital part of the rescue service," she said. "He has spent weekends at home answering calls, and answered 30 during one Christmas break."
Mrs. Kelly also noted that Dr. Kornegay Jr., working with a other rescue EMTs, helped save the life of a small Mount Olive child who had a toy lodged in the throat.
"He said it is satisfying to see people walking down the street and knowing you have helped them," Mrs. Kelly said.

Fire And Rescue

Dr. Kornegay Jr., who received the squad's Rescueperson of the Year Award in 1990, has four brothers and two sisters. He is a member of the Calypso Presbyterian Church, Calypso Fire Department, Mount Olive Rescue Service and the Faison Rescue Service.
Commenting on his recognition, Kornegay told the "Tribune," "It is very special to be nominated for the Richie award. It's hard to put in words, but people come to these banquets and talk about everything that the members of this squad give up to serve the community. And when I look at the things that I have done in the rescue, and all the friends that I have in this room, I can never give enough back to the rescue service for what they have given me.

Loves That Truck

Speaking with the "Tribune' about his love of rescue work, Dr. Kornegay Jr. said, "I love it just like you love writing your stories, I just love that yellow and white truck."
Yellow and white are the colors of the Mount Olive rescue ambulances.
He also recalled how, as a child, he rode with his father on rescue calls.
"I still have pictures you took of me when I was in that little white rescue suit," he told this reporter. "My mother (the late Sara Kornegay) made that, and Mrs. Barbara Cooke of Calypso, put the patches on it."
"I remember my father had a little yellow Mercedes and he had a little round red light that he put on top of the sun roof when he answered a call."

Meet At EMT Course

Dr. Kornegay Jr. is married to the former Vicki Butler of Yorktown, Virginia, who is employed in the Child Protection Services division of the Wayne County Department of Social Services.
The two met when then Miss Butler was taking an EMT course at the Mount Olive Rescue Service building.
Dr. Kornegay Jr. is a 1986 graduate of Wayne Country Day School at Goldsboro. He was graduated in 1990 with a B.S. degree in Biology from East Carolina University at Greenville, and was graduated in 1994 from the East Carolina University School of Medicine.
He began his three-year residency last July.
