Morris Daniel KORNEGAY lived most of his life on the farm. Asthmatic when young, his mother would sometimes have to drag him out onto the front porch for air as he wheezed and gasped for breath. Morris was drafted into the Army and served in Korea and at Ft. Bragg, NC. The asthma continued and Morris found that if he took a drink of whisky - just a sip - his breath came easy. Unfortunately, Morris developed a taste for the whisky and he drank more and more until he became a full-fledged alcoholic. One night in JAN 1956, Morris drove to town to get a shot for his asthma. He was sober. His brother Tony, about a mile away, heard a terrible crash on the highway. A truck had smashed head on into Morris' car and he was pinned in the car and was seriously injured. Morris, half of his face gone, was taken to the hospital in Goldsboro, NC where he died the next day. Morris was buried next to his father in the family cemetary at Kornegay Town in Duplin County. In 1990, his brothers William and Tony and sister Alice moved both Morris and his father from the family cemetary and buried them with Lola Bennett KORNEGAY at Pineview Cemetery. They had Nick KORNEGAY's old stone reworked for Morris and it stands today at his head in Pineview.
