Nicodemus (N. D.) Kornegay Born Feb 14, 1862 - Died Nov 16, 1933
Nicodemus KORNEGAY, born in 1862, was the eighth child of his father Daniel KORNEGAY and mother Martha J. DAIL. Nothing is known of Nicodemus' early life; but as he was born during the Civil War, the economic woes of the Reconstruction most probably colored his upbringing. Nicodemus married Alice GOODSON 28 DEC 1887 in Wolfscrape, NC when both were 25 years old. The ceremony was performed by Thaddeus Jones, Magistrate and the witnesses were C.T. GOODSON, T.J. KORNEGAY, and J.F. GOODSON. To support his family, Nicodemus ran a country store which was adjacent to his house at Kornegay Town in Duplin County. This ensured that his large family was able to obtain almost anything they wanted. Nicodemus' youngest son Irving told me in 1993 that his father sold anything and everything in his store including gas which he sold for 25 cents a gallon and coffins which he made by hand from 18 inch boards. N.D,. as he was called also bought up chickens and eggs from the local rural farmers and resold them. His wife Alice bore him 12 children and died in 1904 in childbirth or from complications arising from childbirth with her last child, Alice KORNEGAY and Nicodemus never remarried. I can't help but wonder how he took care of his young children; his oldest daughter Nora was only seven when her mother Alice died in 1904. Nicodemus deeded land to his sons Nicodemus, Lamb, and Irving in 1926, a copy of which is included in the family history book. The deed to this land is recorded on page 453 of Book 357 on the Office of the Registrar of Deeds, Duplin County Courthouse, Kenansville, NC. Lola Bennett KORNEGAY, who lived in his house in the 1920's, said that he was hard to please. His death certificate indicates that he died of "lobar pneumonia and old age" in November 1933 and is buried in the Kornegay family cemetary at Kornegay Town in Duplin County, NC. |
